An Affiliate Marketing Primer
What is the best way to promote an affiliate marketing product, program, or service?
There are multiple ways of marketing affiliate programs but one of the best is the use of blogs designed purely for the product or service involved. Very few people really understand the true potential of affiliate marketing as a method to generate a monthly income. Many successful people just use a single page site to create the interest needed for the visitor to click on their link. This is an ideal way to earn money for new internet business entrepreneurs especially when they have no product of their own.
Prior to creating a blog or website you will need to have a product or service to sell won't you? (Keep in mind that it does not need to be your own product, which is why you are an affiliate.) Before you do this you would be wise to carefully read the terms and conditions of the company you want to sign up with; failure to do this can cost dearly. If you are taking your business seriously then this is something you would do in the ordinary world (like reading a contract) so don't be fooled by the ease with which the virtual world appears to work. It is quite normal for certain companies that cannot send items to other countries to restrict where their members can live.
Unless you intend to have a massive turnover with a product, steer clear of affiliate programs with less than 50 percent commission payments. A good place to look for products is clickbank.com or for the latest popular items (which change daily) visit ebay.com/pulse or google.com/trends/hottrends. All three will show which areas to put your affiliate marketing effort into. There isn't generally any need to pay for membership of any affiliate program, be very careful of companies that ask for an up front fee. If you don't know what to do about payments then you would be well advised to choose one or both of the following programs: Clickbank or Paypal can both process payments from companies and registration doesn't cost anything. While you are still in the planning stages of creating an affiliate marketing business it is best to stay with what's proven until you have the experience to experiment with other payment methods, such as accepting credit cards or having a merchant account, both of which carry higher monthly fees than Paypal or Clickbank, but which tend to have more name brand recognition and trust because they have been around much longer (such as MasterCard or Visa).
The largest problem when you are new at marketing affiliate products is finding good online help; care must be taken because it is easy to get information overload but there are sites and ebooks to help you. Although some free ebooks contain affiliate links so the author is paid for his work, you do not have to click on these if you do not want to. Dozens of resources exist to help people make money online, some free and some paid but at the start it is advisable to use those free services until you have actually made a profit. This use of free products works well because it is a way for you to see whether the person who supplied them knows what they are doing.
Where possible in you affiliate marketing business, use other forms of advertising to increase your exposure and direct people to your site that might otherwise have not visited it. The purpose behind this is to direct traffic to your website where a certain percentage of people will place an order. By using tracking methods (this is necessary and all affiliate marketers do it) you can decide which advertising methods are effective or ineffective. With affiliate marketing it is easy to work for as many companies as you feel comfortable with. A word of warning: there is also danger of getting bogged down with too much information, this can also be bad or outdated just to make matters worse. As a last piece of advice, it is a good idea to seek out a mentor, someone who has more marketing experience than you do, either online, in the "real world", or both. The mentor can offer you advice which is priceless and can save you wasted effort and money.
